New Illustration: Landscape and History! The Storm on Lake Lucerne

 

As a Burgundian Wars-era (1474-1477) Swiss Foot Soldier crosses a windy pass, in the distance, over the picturesque and beautiful Lake Lucerne, a storm approaches. The wind blows, and two large golden eagles appear to be approaching the Soldier...

This illustration, I loved painting every detail of the wonderful landscape around the Lake, was made especially for "The Alpine Arcane Trophy", a "Sorcery:  Contested Realm" tournament taking place in Baden, Switzerland, in October. The illustration will be published as a special playmat for the winners and as a special card.

Spring in Bern (and its magnificent surroundings)

I would like to welcome spring with a couple of paintings dedicated to the season and to Bern and its region: a wonderful city and an infinitely beautiful landscape. A place of my heart, which I miss a lot.

A barn swallow (Hirundo rustica, Schwalbe) and a house martin (Delichon urbicum, Mehlschwalbe) sitting on the Nydegg bridge, near the church, in a spring view of Bern. From here you can see the gothic Nydeggkirche and its beautiful medieval quarter, with Nydeggstalden street going down, between seventeenth-century houses, towards the banks of the Aare river

And now a little bit of Berne, which is always a joy for a historical illustrator: here is a selection of some of the splendid fountains in the city, decorated with polychrome statues by the Renaissance sculptor Hans Gieng (years around 1540)

And here is an example of the armours of the 30s and 40s of the 16th century, inspired precisely by the Bern fountains: Hans Franz Naegeli wears a specimen while he conquers the Vaud
